Introduction & Classifications

There are six types of machine tools – Lathe, Shaper, Grinder, Planer, Drill & Press, and Bender. The lathe is used to cutting the workpiece in a rotating position on its axis. Shaper is used for cutting a piece of work in a non-rotating position on its axis. It is called a non-rotating position because the tool moves parallel to the axis of rotation and doesn’t rotate. The grinder is used for grinding. Planer is used for shaving or leveling hard or softwood.

A drill press is used for drilling. Bender is used for bending pipes or other metals. These machine tools are classified on the basis of power source, operation, and purpose. Machine tools can be broadly classified as hand-operated or machine-operated. The power source can be either human or mechanical energy. Hand-operated machine tools are powered by human energy, while machine-operated machine tools are powered by an electric motor or a diesel engine.

Purpose:

The purpose of a machine tool is to remove material from a workpiece, shape it or change its form in some way. Machine tools can be used to create objects such as screws, nails, bolts, and gears; to cut and shape wood, metal, and stone; or to drill holes in surfaces.
