About Lassa Virus

  • Lassa fever is a hemorrhagic fever virus similar to Ebola, Marburg, and other hemorrhagic fever viruses.
  • Lassa fever, unlike the Ebola virus, is not as communicable or fatal from person to person.
  • The Lassa virus is usually transmitted to humans through the urine or faeces of Mastomys rats. Direct contact with blood, bodily fluids, urine, or stool of a Lassa fever patient can infect health personnel.
  • Lassa fever is mostly seen in West Africa, where these rodents thrive.
  • Every year, outbreaks of Lassa fever occur. Between December and June, the number of persons infected reaches an all-time high.
  • The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control reported a major outbreak that began in early 2018.

What is Lassa fever, exactly?

The Lassa virus, a single-stranded RNA hemorrhagic fever virus from the Arenaviridae family, causes Lassa fever. It is a one- to a four-week-long acute febrile viral infection that occurs in West Africa and certain other parts of the world.

Causes Of Lassa Virus Fever

  • Once a Mastomys rat has been infected with the virus, it can discharge the virus in its faeces and urine for the remainder of its life.
  • As a result, the virus can easily spread, especially because rats reproduce quickly and can live in human households.
  • Consumption or inhalation of rat urine or faeces is the most typical form of transmission. Cuts and exposed sores can potentially spread the virus.
  • The rats dwell in and around human settlements, and they come into contact with food on a regular basis. People occasionally consume the rats, and the sickness can spread during the cooking process.
  • Blood, tissue, fluids, and excretions can all be used to make contact with another individual, but not touch. The virus can be transferred by sharing needles, and there have been reports of sexual transmission.
  • Lassa fever can also be spread between patients and employees in facilities that aren’t well-equipped with cleanliness and protective clothes.
