Notes

Fatalities in the workplace are unacceptably high. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall workplace fatalities in the United States hit 5,250 in 2018 – the third year in a row that the number has above 5,000. Meanwhile, preventable workplace deaths continue to rise, rising from 4,414 in 2017 to 4,493 in 2018.

Everyone is responsible for their own safety, and the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the need for every employee to make a commitment to work safely. Employers must offer a safe working environment, as well as financial assistance, management oversight, personal protective equipment (PPE), tools, and training that employees require to execute their duties safely. Both management and employees must work together to make safety a personal priority.

These components are all part of a larger safety management system that tries to continuously identify hazards and minimize risks to an acceptable level, reducing the possibility of a workplace event. In the post-quarantine era, this approach will be especially vital as people return to typical work surroundings and routines. Take the pledge below to demonstrate your dedication to safety in the workplace and anywhere else.

I promise to:

  • To get the job done, I never put my personal safety or the safety of my coworkers at risk.
  • Actively seek out hazards, report them promptly, and take proper precautions to alert others.
  • Be a good safety role model for my friends and family, even when off the job
